About Us

Four generations. One family. One shop.

Pounds began in 1947, when Arthur Redwood and Walter Skinner opened a single shop in Ponders End, on the High Street. They sold radios, then black and white televisions, and worked the way good shopkeepers always have — looking after the people who walked through the door, and trusting that they'd come back.

That first shop became three. In the mid-1960s, colour television arrived, and Arthur's son Geoff took over the family business at the perfect moment. His career ran straight through the most exciting decades in consumer technology — colour TVs, video recorders, compact discs, laser discs, Atari games consoles, Technics turntables. Geoff was always sourcing the latest, and the shop grew alongside him to take in furniture and domestic appliances. A one-stop shop for the home — something we still believe in today.

In the 1980s, the third generation joined: Geoff's son Martin, and his daughter Maxine. Home cinema was the new frontier, and following our certification by Lucasfilm THX it became central to what we offered. Over time that side of the business has grown into our successful sister company, The London Home Cinema Company — specialists in bespoke home cinema design, smart home automation and high-end AV integration.

The fourth generation is now part of the business too: Maxine's son Fergus has joined the family at Green Lanes, carrying on a story that began nearly eighty years ago.

 

What we do today

From our showroom on Green Lanes in Winchmore Hill, we sell televisions, audio equipment, furniture, and a full range of domestic appliances — washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, hobs, fridge freezers and more. We're authorised retailers for the manufacturers our customers know and trust.

We deliver and install ourselves, locally, in our own vans. Our team will unwrap your new appliance, plumb it in, set up your television, take away the packaging, and recycle your old equipment responsibly. For more complex installations — TV wall mounting, integrated appliances, network setup, multi-room audio — we have expert engineers on hand.

We're a family business in our fourth generation, and we run the shop the way our grandfather did: by knowing what we sell, doing what we promise, and treating customers the way we'd want to be treated ourselves.

We're members of Euronics (the UK's largest independent electrical retail group),  CEDIA, and the Imaging Science Foundation, and we're fully certified Lucasfilm THX retailers and installers. These memberships keep us connected to the wider trade, but more importantly they back up the standard of advice and service we offer.

Our showroom is at 870–878 Green Lanes, London N21 2RS — a few minutes from Winchmore Hill station. We welcome visitors any time during opening hours; no appointment needed.
